Za'atar Spice
Description
Za'atar spice is an ancient culinary tradition in the world of Lebanese cuisine and broader Middle Eastern cuisine. The term za'atar itself is Arabic for thyme. Our special za'atar spice blend is a delicate balance of wild thyme, ground sumac, toasted sesame seeds, and sea salt. Za'atar thyme imparts a bold herb flavor to the spice, while the addition of sumac from the berry of the wild sumac flower provides its lemony flavor. Sesame seeds lend a nutty flavor.
We consider our za'atar blend the very finest available. It is imported from Lebanon where this Middle Eastern spice blend is expertly crafted in small batches on a family farm, and where it is an essential flavor-maker in Mediterranean cooking. Zaatar spice can be used in many wonderful ways; it belongs in recipes both simple and more complex. A drizzle of good olive oil mixed with this vibrant spice makes a quick and lush dip for a piece of bread or pita bread, pita chips, and vegetables. And French fries! Rub that same mixture over flatbread and bake for the iconic man'oushe flatbread that is so beloved in Lebanon and beyond. Dust over roast vegetables (again with extra virgin olive oil) for bold flavors, stir into salad dressings and dips such as baba ganoush and hummus.
Store za'atar at room temperature in its airtight container and keep it handy by the stove, where you'll find all kinds of ways to use it!
Recipes for homemade za'atar abound, but the key flavor ingredient of dried wild thyme leaves are not readily available. A combination of herbs (dried herbs) may be used to try your hand at za'atar blending, such as wild oregano (Syrian oregano or origanum syriacum from the oregano family) and marjoram.
